Coordinating conjunctions in German (A1)

In German, coordinating conjunctions are small words that connect two ideas without changing the word order. They’re perfect for beginners because you can join simple sentences and start sounding more natural. Click the play button to listen to each sentence and repeat out loud.

Coordinating conjunctions in German examples

Here are the most common coordinating conjunctions at A1 level:

  • und – and
  • oder – or
  • aber – but
  • denn – because

1. “und” (and)

Use und to connect two ideas of equal importance. The verb position does not change.

Ich lerne Deutsch und ich höre Musik.

I study German and I listen to music.

Ich trinke Kaffee und ich lese ein Buch.

I drink coffee and I read a book.

Wir gehen nach Hause und wir kochen.

We go home and we cook.

2. “oder” (or)

Use oder to offer options or choices.

Möchtest du Kaffee oder Tee?

Do you want coffee or tea?

Sprechen Sie Deutsch oder Englisch?

Do you speak German or English?

Ist das ein Apfel oder eine Birne?

Is that an apple or a pear?

3. “aber” (but)

Use aber to contrast two ideas.

Ich lerne Deutsch, aber es ist schwer.

I’m learning German, but it’s difficult.

Ich habe Zeit, aber ich bin müde.

I have time, but I am tired.

Er kommt, aber er kommt spät.

He is coming, but he is coming late.

4. “denn” (because)

Use denn to give a simple reason. It is easier than “weil” because the verb does not move to the end.

Ich bleibe zu Hause, denn ich bin krank.

I stay at home because I am sick.

Ich esse jetzt, denn ich habe Hunger.

I eat now because I am hungry.

Wir fahren früh los, denn wir arbeiten.

We leave early because we work.
